The Schlafly Farmers Market, as part of Schlafly’s Sustainability Program, encourages all our vendors to use recyclable or compostable packaging as well as to source products locally when they can. El Chico Bakery makes fruit empanadas and cookies at their bakery on Cherokee Street and they’ve been a hit at local markets for several years. And now El Chico and Oscar Rivera have taken the local sourcing leap.
With a bumper crop of strawberries available from Freeland’s Vegetable & Berry Farm, Oscar grabbed a tray for experimentation. See the pics for a couple steps along the way – chopping up the strawberries, and then placing them into the rolled out empanada dough. The next step is YOU coming to the market and trying these empanadas with local strawberries!
